PAika Palto is an initiative of PAika, the Psychiatric
Department for Infants, Children and Adolescents at UZ Brussels, with expertise
in Connective Authority and Non-Violent Resistance. We bring our knowledge to
the classroom and living groups to give young people and their carers maximum
opportunities without stigmatisation. Thanks to our many years of experience,
we know how important it is to strengthen both young people and their network.
We believe that every young person has the right to a safe environment in which
they can grow, develop and learn.
Palto evokes a feeling of warmth, embrace and protection. It
is reminiscent of a garment, in some languages a coat or cloak. This fits in
well with the idea of protection against the “cold” of mental challenges and
offering safety and support.
Dorien Vertommen is an educationalist and social worker who joined PAika in 2011. In addition to her many years of experience working with primary school children, she is highly skilled in assisting schools to develop appropriate care programmes. In recent years, Dorien has completed various training courses (e.g. VSVG (Flemish Specialisation in Group Leadership), a 5-day course in Non-Violent Resistance from the BIGV, training as a PTV trainer (Person- and Team-Oriented Safety Techniques), and ongoing training in non-violent resistance.
